Using Urban Firework Blasts as VCV Rack Impulse Responses.

One of the beautiful things about convolved spaces is that depending on the frequency range fed into them, they can be quite dynamic. This patch is quite simple but the high pass filter makes a huge difference how that space is perceived.

These IR spaces are from my binaural and stereo recording collection of my city, Valencia, Spain.

They were recorded during the annual Fallas festival firework displays, called “Mascletas”. Theses really give a sense of distance in the city and evoke the liminal spaces they were recorded in.

Modules Needed

You will need the “Convolvzilla” module from here:

Once installed you can just throw an IR wav file on the modules waveform and it will change to that.

IR descriptions

– 01_Concrete_Bridge01_BreathFilm_Element433

Recorded at 5 metres from firework under this concreate bridge.

– 02 Binar_Empty Uban Centre_BreathFilm_Element433

Recorded at 200 metres from display epicentre. You can here how the concrete building and streets tunnel resonances about.

05 Binar_Empty Urban Centre Bloom Burst_BreathFilm_Element433

Close location to the previous. Lots of reveration and resonances from the sound travelling and bouncing through different streets and concrete.

Watch Input levels with this. try around 0.1. The impulse is made of clusters of fireworks so it has a certain amount of “distortion” already but you’ll be able to tell straight away if you are adding more. Recorded here.

– 11 Binar_Empty Urban Centre Cluster Rev_BreathFilm_Element433

!Careful with the input level on this one as it is very energetic. I have the In Level of the Convolvzilla at 0.1 Recorded here.

– 14 Binar_Empty Urban Centre  02_BreathFilm_Element433

As previous from a different angle some 20 meteres away

– 15 Far_Breath Film_Element433

Some 2 Km away from epicentre. Sound has travelleved through a lot of streets and open space. If you play with the cut-off frequency of the high pass filter you can get different perspectives of this space.

-16 echoblast_Breath Film_Element433

similar to previous but with more defined echo

-21_open space_Breath Film_Element433

Open space in middle of high rise flats about 50m2
